The Coup Attempt in Germany

On December 7, 2022, the German authorities announced the dismantling of a network of supporters of an extreme right-wing group that aimed to seize power by carrying out an armed attack on the German Parliament building and controlling it, stressing that it is an operation that has been planned since November 2021. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed He expressed his deep concern that the ideas of extremists have reached this unprecedented level internally. German Interior Minister Nancy Weser described the activists behind the act as “united in their hatred of democracy and the German state.” This attempted coup against power in Germany sparked a great controversy about the movement involved in it, its motives, as well as its repercussions during the coming period.

According to information issued by the official government agencies in Germany, the details of this coup plot can be summarized in the following points:

  1. The accused: 25 out of 52 wanted far-right extremists were arrested in a sweeping operation that covered all parts of Germany, most of them are elderly, and they are suspected of forming an organized group, and their supposed leaders include:

Heinrich XIII, 71, a scion of a noble family from the state of Thuringia in eastern Germany, whose family origins give him influence among extremists.

  • A former lieutenant colonel in the German army named “Rudiger”, who was the commander of a battalion of paratroopers in the 1990s.
    • A judge named “Birgit Malsack Wenkmann”, a former deputy of the far-right “Alternative for Germany” AFD party between 2017 and 2021, and she was handed over the justice bag in the “conspirators’ government”, as described by the German authorities.

A spokesman for the German Defense Ministry, Arne Kolatz, also announced that there were other soldiers involved, one of whom belonged to the Special Forces Command.

  • Their ideological orientations: The German Federal Prosecutor, Peter Frank, announced that the participants in the planning process for the coup are followers of the ideological ideas of the “QAnon” group, which believes in the conspiracy theory, and they belong to the “Reichsbürger” movement; It is a movement that appeared in the eighties and does not recognize the legitimacy of the current German state, and its supporters refuse to pay taxes or submit to the police, and their total number is estimated at about 20,000, including a small group estimated at about a thousand people who have become highly organized since the end of 2021, as it has a central organizational structure and a military wing. Its members have licenses to own weapons.
  • The coup plan: According to a press release issued by the German prosecution, the stalkers prepared concretely to enter the seat of parliament in Berlin (Bundestag) with a small armed group, in a scenario similar to the attack on the Capitol building by supporters of the former US President, Donald Trump. They were also trained to handle weapons, and at least four meetings were held during the summer to expand the network of members of this group. Recruitment efforts specifically targeted members of the German police and army. The military branch of the cell was responsible for purchasing weapons and organizing training.

Multiple dimensions overlapped in an attempt to analyze the timing and objectives of this coup attempt in Germany, the most important of which are the following:

  1. Hinting at Russian involvement in the coup plot: The German press indicated that there was a partner within the coup network, a Russian citizen named “Vitalia”; A friend of Henry XIII, she attempted to act as an intermediary to coordinate contact with the Russian authorities for possible support. However, the Kremlin strongly denied any “Russian interference” in this file, and the Russian embassy in Berlin denied any involvement in these terrorist activities. Later, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented that no Russian Interference of any kind could be discussed.
  2. The German security services showed their strength: about 3,000 security personnel were mobilized to carry out the coup thwarting operation, and more than 130 searches and raids were conducted, in a procedure that German media described as the largest ever police operation in the country. The campaign of arrests was also carried out in 11 out of 16 German states, and the inspections included army barracks in southwestern Germany, to show that the security system in the country is very strong, and that the intelligence services are working efficiently, after criticism that it had not obtained prior information about The plan to blow up the gas pipelines “Nord Stream 1 and 2” and the failure to find the perpetrators.
  3. The power of influence of “conspiracy theory” narratives: “Reichscitizens” believe that a “deep state” actually rules Germany, similar to the ideas of the QAnon movement that emerged in the United States and considers that there is a targeting of the white man, which many analyzes linked to the storming of a building The Capitol in January 2021. Supporters of the “Reichsburg” movement tried to enter the German Parliament in August 2020, in protest against the health restrictions imposed during the Corona pandemic, against which resentment was exploited to attract more supporters of their movement. Supporters of this trend have also intimidated some doctors who are vaccinating against Covid-19, and some of them are attributed to trying to plan the kidnapping of the German Minister of Health.
  4. Evoking the imperial past of Germany: Some supporters of the “Reichsburg” or “citizens of the Reich” believe that the true form of Germany existed between 1871 and 1918, while others consider that the constitution of the Weimar Republic between the two world wars is the constitution of the real Germany, while a third group focuses on considering The legal borders of German lands are the borders that were established in 1937. Most of the “Reichsburgs” refuse to recognize the legitimacy of the current democratic state in Germany, and they aim to return to the former imperial form, but they lack a unified vision about the preferred alternative system, is it akin to a constitutional monarchy For Kaiser Wilhelm II, or the democratic experience of the Weimar Republic, or the experience of Nazi rule? The recent coup attempt and the selection of Henry XIII as the head of power reveals the longing for the restoration of a constitutional monarchy in the style of Caesarean rule.
  5. Recalling the “Beer Hall” coup in 1923: The failed attempt at the current coup in Germany with the approach of 2023 brought back memories of the coup organized by the German National Socialist Workers’ Party (the Nazi Party) about a hundred years ago, specifically in 1923. Although That coup was successfully suppressed by the police at the time, it changed the course of German history, because it drew the attention of the German people towards Adolf Hitler. At a time when Germany was facing high inflation, Hitler tried to overthrow the Weimar Republic, and although his coup attempt failed, his Nazi party grew significantly after that.

The thwarted coup in Germany could have many repercussions in the near future, the most prominent of which can be explained in the following:

  1. Tightening control over extremists and preventing their possession of weapons: There were calls to monitor supporters of the far-right to ensure their adherence to the law, and the German Minister of the Interior, Nancy Wesser, came out to stress that the government must do better to combat the violence of the extreme right, and to prevent its possession of weapons, especially within army and police. Organizations and associations that fight the extreme right criticize the previous censorship process, because it was not conducted sufficiently, as extremists managed to cross the red line for a long time despite the huge amount of warnings. There are currently demands to grant the intelligence service the right to wiretap phone calls, subject public sector employees, especially teachers who propagandize and promote the ideas of this trend, to disciplinary measures, and prevent the employment of those suspected of belonging to it.
  2. Increasing attempts to threaten public order in Germany through violence: In recent years, the German authorities have ranked violent acts of the extreme right as the number one threat to public order. The Reichsburg rejects the Federal Republic of Germany and its democratic structures, and most of them believe that the Allies in World War II, who defeated Nazi Germany in 1945, still rule it in secret, and that Germany is not a sovereign state.

The coup attempt, whichh was recently revealed, indicates that some followers of the “Reichsburg” began to engage in political violence, especially since it was preceded by other acts of violence, such as the killing of a police officer during a raid on a member of this movement on charges of possession of weapons in 2016. It also occurred An attack on a bar in an area near Frankfurt in 2020, leaving 9 dead. An activist in the field of refugee assistance was also assassinated in June 2019, in addition to recording dozens of attacks on the homes of asylum seekers between 2015 and 2020. Also, 2020 saw the dismantling of a network of “neo-Nazis” within the Bundeswehr

  • The decline in the popularity of the AfD: In contrast to this right-wing populist party that has adapted its rhetoric to suit the prevailing and acceptable political atmosphere in Germany, some followers of the “Reichsburg” completely ignore the current German laws, as they are known for their anti-democracy. The Alternative for Germany party has always tried to deny any links to the “Reichsburg” movement, but the German Ministry of the Interior confirmed the existence of links between the two parties in some areas. Perhaps the involvement of a former deputy for the “Alternative for Germany” party in the recent coup would have negative repercussions on the popularity of this party, which tended to try to take advantage of the political climate dissatisfied with the performance of the government of the current German chancellor, Olaf Schultz, with inflation reaching more than from 10%.
  • Fear of the expansion of political extremism in Europe: The limits of the extremist right’s threats are not limited to Germany only. Attempts to resort to this type of behavior have been monitored in neighboring or close countries in Europe such as Belgium, but on a smaller scale. Some analyzes attribute the reasons for the spread of these violent groups in many European countries to the current rise of political extremism in Europe that question the credibility of democratic systems and are strict in the issue of refusing immigration.

Despite the description of the recent coup attempt in Germany as a marginal act, the fear remains that the ideas of the “Reichsburg” movement will appeal to a broader audience than those who are disaffected by the economic crisis in Germany resulting from the Russian-Ukrainian war, and before that the Corona crisis, or that groups will succeed Armed from this trend to associate with more influential political organizations, which will make it more dangerous, and perhaps that is why the German authorities took this matter seriously.

“The passionate cricket fans of Quetta have been waiting for long to watch high-profile cricket in their backyard and I am pleased that we will now bring PSL matches to their doors. CM Elahi says assembly ‘will be dissolved’ after assurance to court

LAHORE, DEC 23:Chief Minister Parvez Elahi said Friday that the Punjab Assembly will be dissolved in line with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s directives, moments after he assured a high court that he would not disband the legislative.

Earlier today, the Lahore High Court restored Elahi as the chief minister following an undertaking submitted by him stating that he would not dissolve the legislative.

“The decision to dissolve the assemblies is final; Imran Khan’s decision will be implemented,” the chief minister said in a tweet.

CM Elahi said that the “imported government” was running from elections, but the Punjab government will ensure that it is “presented in the people’s court”.

Before Elahi, PTI Senior Vice-President Fawad Chaudhry insisted that provincial assemblies will be dissolved “in any case”.

“The undertaking that Parvez Elahi has given is technical. However, the PTI does not agree with the undertaking that was given to the court. Assemblies will be dissolved in any case,” Fawad told journalists in Lahore.

The court restored Parvez Elahi, the provincial cabinet, and also did not make it mandatory for the chief minister to take a vote of confidence on Punjab Governor Baligh-ur-Rehman’s orders.

Fawad said the court has proved today that the PTI’s stance was the right, and it nullified the governor’s notification to remove Elahi. “The governor will be summoned to Punjab Assembly for questioning about the notification.”

Fawad, who was information minister in the previous government,  also said that Elahi was ready to take the vote of confidence and that maybe he would ask the speaker to summon a session in this regard within a week. “Our only demand was that the session takes place once our lawmakers, who are abroad, return.”

The senior PTI leader added that Punjab Assembly Speaker Sibtain Khan would write a letter to President Arif Alvi for the removal of Rehman.

Hearing

Minutes before, a five-member bench headed by Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh and comprising Justices Justices Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal, Tariq Saleem Sheikh, Asim Hafeez and Muzamil Akhtar Shabir — heard Elahi’s plea filed against Rehman’s order.

The LHC wanted an undertaking from Elahi that he would not dissolve the assembly as if he would resort to the move, it could deepen the ongoing political turmoil in the province.

The court took two breaks — of 10 minutes and an hour — and asked Elahi’s counsel Barrister Ali Zafar to consult his client about the undertaking.

Following the assurance of not dissolving from the PML-Q leader, the court reinstated him as the chief minister. The LHC also issued notices to all the parties in the case and summoned them on January 11.

The court also did not make it compulsory for the chief minister to take a vote of confidence on the Punjab governor’s orders.

Assembly passes resolution against governor

The Punjab Assembly earlier passed a resolution, deploring Governor Rehman’s “illegal” move to remove Elahi as the chief minister.

PTI MPA Mian Muhammad Aslam Iqbal moved the resolution, calling on President Arif Alvi to take action against the province’s governor.

The resolution mentioned that the “imported government” in the centre has “attacked” Punjab and an attempt is also being made to destabilise the province.

In response to the resolution, the chief minister said it holds “importance” and in light of it, he called on the president to take action against the governor for “misconduct”.

“He should be immediately removed from his position.”

Political turmoil

The political crisis in Punjab does not seem to be ceased soon as lawmakers sitting on treasury and opposition benches appeared at loggerheads over who will get the CM’s Office and who will take it over next.

In his bid to oust the chief minister, the governor — a member of the PML-N — had ordered the CM to take a vote of confidence at 4pm on December 21.

But Punjab Assembly Speaker Muhammad Sibtain Khan Punjab — a PTI leader — termed the order against the Constitution and adjourned an ongoing session till Friday — which resumed today.

In response, the governor disagreed with the speaker and rejected his reasonings for not summoning a session. He added that the ruling has “no bearing” on the order to hold a session for the confidence vote.

Following this, in a notification issued in the wee hours of Friday, the governor de-notified Elahi as the chief minister, citing his reluctance to take a vote of confidence.

Rehman said that since he believes that Elahi does not command the confidence of the Punjab Assembly, he was de-notifying him as the chief minister and also dissolving the provincial cabinet.

But the PTI and the PML-Q alike rejected the notification and moved the Lahore High Court against it.

Telecom Industry Starts Issuing SIMs through Multi Finger Biometric Verification System

Islamabad: 23 Dec: /DNA/ – Telecom industry has started issuing SIMs through an enhanced version of Biometric Verification System (BVS) called Multi Finger Biometric Verification System (MBVS). This was stated in a ceremony held at PTA Headquarters for signing of the contract between NADRA and Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs) after smooth transition to the new BVS.

The BVS devices available at sale channels have been upgraded to meet the requirements of the new system through NADRA and CMOs. The new system requires impressions of multiple fingers for authentication and applicant antecedents while issuing new or duplicate SIM. Moreover, the control for choice of fingers for verification purposes has been shifted from the seller representative to the system which asks for two different fingers’ impressions randomly. The implementation of new system will make the illegal use of fake fingerprints impossible.
The signing ceremony was attended by Chairman PTA, Maj. General Amir Azeem Bajwa (R), Chairman NADRA, Mr. Muhammad Tariq Malik; Member (Compliance & Enforcement) PTA Dr. Khawar Siddique Khokhar; Additional Director General FIA and representatives from CMOs.
Chairman PTA, while lauding the untiring efforts of CMOs and NADRA in the upgradation of MBVS, said that the new system will be a catalyst in controlling the sales of SIMs issued illegally.
Speaking at the occasion, Chairman NADRA stated that MBVS has the immense potential to keep fraudsters and scammers away. He said MBVS is a smart solution which uses an indigenous smart algorithm where choice of finger is proposed by the system rather than prefixed finger positions.
“The MBVS will not only eliminate silicon-based fingerprints used for issuance of mobile phone SIMs but also will hamper the attempts to purchase illegal SIMs. The new system will combat fake SIM issuance, ID fraud, protect privacy and strengthen national security of Pakistan”, he added.
MBVS has been made possible due to strenuous and continued efforts of the teams from PTA, NADRA and CMOs. It is pertinent to mention that BVS was implemented in 2014 in order to offer secure online biometric verification for each SIM related transaction as well as assigning Unique Sale ID and logging of each transaction so that the person responsible for misuse is identifiable. However, to further enhance the system and counter problems regarding SIMs issued using illegal means, MBVS has been introduced.

The new verification system will be helpful towards eliminating the use of SIMs attained through illegal ways in fraudulent financial transactions and other criminal activities.

RSS-BJP Demagoguery of 2002 Gujarat Pogrom continues to thrive

The intimidation of India’s over 200 million Muslims has always been a norm in India, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken it to new heights.Since his election to India’s top elected office, Modi has elevated fellow right-wing Hindu extremists to positions of power in India. The entire Indian legal and administrative machinery is blindly pursuing the Hindutva-driven agenda of the ruling BJP-RSS nexus, where perpetrators of hate and violence are protected by law and enjoy impunity; where religious minorities are constantly threatened and denied the freedom to practice their faith without fearfor their lives, property, and places of worship.

The Modi government is making relentless attempts to remould Indian democracy aimed at empowering Hindus to make them constitutionally pre-eminent, and as a consequence relegating minorities to the status of second-class citizens. The US Commission on International Religious Freedom accused New Delhi of a “crackdown on civil society and dissent”, and “religious freedom violations”.

The BJP government has repeatedly been seen making all-out efforts to cash in on its divisive policies even two decades after the horrific Gujarat massacreby seeking electoral approval of its well-orchestrated pogrom in 2002.Weeks before the recent State elections in Gujarat, the BJP government approved the premature release of 11 men convicted of rape and murder of Muslim women and children during the 2002 pogrom, a saga of appalling riots that led to the killing of over two thousand and displacement of over 200,000 Muslims.

Hundreds of young Muslim girls were sexually assaulted, tortured, and killed.  In June 2022, the Supreme Court of India handed a clean chit to Modi. The Supreme Court dismissed as many as 11 petitions, including one filed by the National Human Rights Commission of India, seeking an independent probe into the 2002 Gujarat riots cases.

Though Modi has always been in denial, his party leaders have never shied away from claiming “credit” for the massacre. On November 25, while on an electoral campaign in Gujarat, Home Minister Amit Shah said Muslims were “taught a lesson” in 2002. And that:“After they were taught a lesson in 2002, these elements left that path (of violence). They refrained from indulging in violence from 2002 till 2022. BJP has established permanent peace in Gujarat by taking strict action against those who used to indulge in communal violence.”

The political dividend of this discordant electoral campaign was phenomenal. Modi’s BJP won a huge majority of 156 seats, the most ever won by any party in Gujarat’s history. The Indian National Congress fell to its lowest count in the state for 3 decades—17, and the newcomer Aam Aadmi Party bagged five seats.

“The butcher of Gujarat lives, and he is the prime minister of India,” Foreign Minister Bilawal BhuttoZardari told a UN briefing, on December 15. “He (Narendra Modi) was banned from entering this country (the US). These are the prime minister and foreign minister of RSS, which draws inspiration from Hitler’s SS,” he added.

Madhav S. Golwalkar, considered among the founders of the Hindu Nationalist movement in India — whom Modi idealises and idolises — saw Islam and Muslims as enemies. He said: “Ever since that evil day when Moslems first landed in Hindusthan, right up to the present moment, the Hindu Nation has been gallantly fighting to shake off the despoilers.” In his book “We”, Golwalkar heaped praises upon Nazi leader Adolf Hitler and his Holocaust against minoritiesand encouraged India to follow a similar path.

In 2012, a former Chief Minister of Gujarat, Mr.ShankersinhVaghela accused Modi’s state government of having blood on its hands: “The foundation of this (Modi) government rests on the 2002 carnage. Governments are made, but not on conspiracies. And the people of Gujarat know this, and that’s why we are requesting the people for a change,” Mr Vaghela had said.

Paul Richard Brass, professor emeritus of political science and international relations at the University of Washington, believes these anti-Muslim riots are not spontaneous but planned and staged as “a grisly form of dramatic production” by well-known perpetrators from the Sangh Parivar of which Modi has been an ardent member since his youth.

On November 28, The Guardian aptly commented editorially on India’s ill- treatment of its Muslim community: “New Delhi’s foreign policy won’t be insulated from its domestic politics, which demonises India’s 200 million Muslims”. In a piece captioned: “The Danger of Exporting Hindu Chauvinism”, the paper commented: “The US state department has recently told a court that India’s Narendra Modi’s failure as chief minister of Gujarat to prevent anti-Muslim riots in 2002 that left hundreds dead saw him denied entry to the US until he became Indian prime minister”.

And that “the ban had not been withdrawn, but suspended because Mr. Modi ran a country that Washington wanted to do business with”.The ban will be back once Modi is out of power. It was an indication that India could find the international community less accommodating if the RSS-BJP duo continues to stir up hatred to win elections. The West is also worried about Modi’s India exporting Hindu extremism to the Indian diaspora across the world.

The international community, particularly Human Rights entities and activists needs to take serious note of the disturbing escalation of Islamophobia in India. The United Nations needs to immediately constitute an independent Commission of Inquiry to bring the culprits of the horrific Godhra-Gujarat massacre of 2002, to justice.

IK knows that his power ended by losing the majority

ISLAMABAD, DEC 23 (DNA) — Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said that Imran Khan knows that his power ended by losing the majority. In response to Imran Khan’s statement, Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said that he had imposed on the country by stealing the mandate of Nawaz Sharif.

“Imran Khan ended his government with his lies, corruption and incompetence. The one who drowned the country in the swamp asks why I was taken out” she added. “Anything that is not yours must be returned to the original owner”, she said.

She said that Imran Khan was fully aware that his government would fell when he lost majority in the National Assembly and his lies, corruption and incompetence were the reasons behind PTI regime’s downfall.

“Hundred per cent Pakistanis say that the only solution to the country’s problems is transparent elections, but after the completion of the constitutional term by October 2023”, she maintained.

Castigating PTI chairman, she said Imran Khan took anti-people steps, violated the constitution and played with the country’s interests, especially on Kashmir issue. She reminded Imran Khan that today was December 23, the day he had claimed, “Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assemblies would be dissolved.”

She said that people’s war was against those who ran away from accountability after looting the country and Toshakhana. Imran Khan’s loot and plunder destroyed employment opportunities in the country, she remarked. = DNA
