Imran Khan files contempt plea against Pemra in LHC

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan Saturday filed a contempt of court plea in the Lahore High Court (LHC) against the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra).

In his petition, Khan claimed that the electronic media regulator has not lifted the ban on his speeches despite court orders.

Last month, the provincial top court suspended Pemra’s notification banning the broadcast of the PTI chief’s speeches on television channels.

In view of his “provocative statements against the state institutions and officers”, Pemra imposed a ban on broadcasting live and recorded speeches of Khan on all satellite TV channels with immediate effect on March 5.

The petition by the PTI chairman stated that the court had directed Pemra not to impose any ban on the broadcasting of the former prime minister’s speeches which are being prevented from being aired despite orders and deemed the authority’s act as contempt of court.

“That the Respondent has failed to abide by his constitutional obligations envisaged under the Article 204 of the Constitution of Pakistan, 1973,” read Khan’s plea.

The plea has sought action against responsible officers for contempt of court under Article 204 of the Constitution.

“The Respondent be summoned and proceeded against under Article 204 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, 1973, read with Sections 3&4 of the Contempt of Court Ordinance, 2003, and be punished accordingly for having committed willful contempt of the Order of this Honorable Court,” the petition read.

The former premier, in his plea, wrote that Pemra’s actions are contrary to and in contradiction with Article 10-A of the Constitution of Pakistan.

“The same are bad in law being ‘ultra vires’ the Constitution, illegal, without jurisdiction, against the fundamental rights of the Petitioner and of no legal effect. In view whereof, the Respondents should refrain from acting in a manner prejudicial to the interests of the Petitioners and contrary to law and Constitution,” said the petition.

It added that the electronic media watchdog is being “discriminatory, oppressive, unjust, and violative of fundamental rights especially denying the access to justice to the citizens for having a fair trial and violative of Rule of Law and due process of Law.”

“That impugned action of the Respondent is ‘ultravires’ according to Articles 8, 9, 18, and 25 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan 1973,” the petition mentioned.

Khan also stated that Pemra has “willfully flouted” the court’s judgment lowering its prestige and honour. The watchdog, through the order’s violation, has ridiculed the authority of the court resorting to clear disobedience; hence, it is “liable to be punished as prescribed by the law of the Contempt of Court.”

Govt moves SC for withdrawal of curative review against Justice Qazi Faez Isa

ISLAMABAD, APR 1: The government of Pakistan Saturday filed a plea in Supreme Court to withdraw a curative review petition against Justice Qazi Faez Isa.

In its petition, the government stated that it wants to withdraw the appeal filed against the judgment of the country’s top court.

“The government does not want to pursue this case,” the petition read seeking withdrawal of the case while considering the requirements of justice.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, two days earlier, announced the government’s decision to call off the review against Justice Isa dubbing it an act of state-led vengeance by the former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led regime.

“On my direction, the government has decided to withdraw the Curative Review Petition against senior most Judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Qazi Faez Isa,” the premier wrote in his tweet.

PM Shehbaz said that the curative review was based on the ill will to “harass and intimidate” Justice Isa at his predecessor’s (Imran Khan) “behest”.

A separate statement issued by the PM Office shared that a cabinet meeting chaired by the premier had already given assent to taking back the reference. It added that Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar has been directed by the PM to take back the curative plea.

The federal cabinet, in July last year, had approved the withdrawal of the curative review petition.

In 2021, the Imran Khan-led government filed a curative review petition against the order of the majority in the review petitions of Justice Qazi Faez Isa passed on April 26 of the same year.

However, the registrar of the Supreme Court returned the instant petition after raising objections to it, saying that once the review petition is decided, it cannot be reviewed.

Pak vs NZ: Saqlain Mushtaq joins New Zealand as assistant coach for Pakistan tour

Former off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq is all set to perform his duties as the New Zealand team’s assistant coach for the upcoming limited-overs series against Pakistan.

“I have accepted this role for a brief period after New Zealand Cricket approached me. I will only work with the team during their stay in Pakistan,” Saqlain confirmed while speaking to Geo News.

“I am currently in the United States and will join the NZ squad upon my return on April 12,” said the former interim Pakistan head coach.

Mushtaq will work with the Black Caps during the T20I and ODI series against Pakistan, scheduled to be played in April-May. The series includes five ODIs and as many T20Is.

Mushtaq recently served as head coach of the Pakistan team but he left the role after his contract expired in February earlier this year.

The development comes as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to appoint a new coaching staff led by Mickey Arthur — who will serve as a consultant.

Arthur has previously served as head coach of the Pakistan team for three years, having taken up the mantle in 2016. During his tenure, Pakistan also won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017.

However, the PCB decided to not renew the contracts of Arthur and his support staff, following the team’s fifth-place finish at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019.

According to sources, the PCB has nearly finalised all the details with regard to the coaching staff and an official announcement is expected soon.

Additionally, sources added that New Zealand’s Grant Bradburn, who has worked as Pakistan’s fielding coach in the past, could be named as head coach, meanwhile, former South Africa pacer Morne Morkel is in the mix for the role of bowling coach.

It must be noted that the schedule for the series between Pakistan and New Zealand was revised recently due to elections in Punjab.

“The Pakistan Cricket Board and New Zealand Cricket have unanimously agreed to make tweaks to the New Zealand men’s cricket team’s tour of Pakistan for five ODIs and five T20Is,” the PCB stated in a press release on March 20.

“The side will now arrive in Lahore and will play three T20Is from 14-17 April, before travelling to Rawalpindi where the final two T20Is and first ODI will be played from 20-26 April. The tour will culminate in Karachi with the remaining four ODIs to be played from 30 April to 7 May.

“This is an additional tour by the New Zealand cricket team and the matches will count towards ICC Team Rankings. The ODIs will help Pakistan to prepare their side for the ACC Asia Cup and ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, while the T20I will assist the PCB to continue with their rebuilding of the side for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, which will be held in the USA and West Indies in June/July 2024.”

Schedule:
April 14 — 1st T20I, Lahore

April 15 — 2nd T20I, Lahore

April 17 — 3rd T20I, Lahore

April 20 — 4th T20I, Rawalpindi

April 24 — 5th T20I, Rawalpindi

April 26 — 1st ODI, Rawalpindi

Chinese ornamental plants beautify Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, APR 1 (DNA): China has contributed more than half of ornamental plants in today’s gardens around the world, according to a study conducted by the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS).

Like the rest of the world, Pakistanis have also benefited from Chinese research and experience beautifying their homes and gardens with ornamental plants, according to a report published by Gwadar Pro.

Apart from beautification, through Chinese ornamental plants, Pakistan can also combat climate change, one of the serious issues the country is facing.

Pakistan has a great demand for Chinese ornamental plants, people decorate their gardens, homes, and offices with these plants. Chinese ornamental plants are available in nurseries as well as in online plant markets in Pakistan.

“Various ornamental plants are imported from China,” Ayaz Khan, manager of Leaf Nurseries, H-9 Islamabad, told Gwadar Pro.

According to Mr. Khan, the demand for imported plants including Chinese plants is increasing day by day. “Chinese fringe flower and strap flower (Loropetalum Chinense) and Chinese wisteria plants are among the most demanded ornamental plants in the nursery,” he said, adding that gardeners like Chinese wisteria for their “beauty and long life”.

At least five types of Chinese citrus (lemon) are available in his nursery. “Chinese lemons are grown at home both for beautification and to derive citrus fruit from them,” Ayaz Khan added.

According to him, Chinese lemons could be excellent houseplants, as they can be kept in containers as well. “Finger Lime is the most attractive Chinese lemon,” he said.

Abdullah, a resident of Rawalpindi, bought Red Robin (photinia x fraseri) for his garden. “This is my favorite flowering shrub which can withstand the weather of the Potohar region,” he said, adding, “China is called ‘the Mother of World Gardens’; Pakistan should benefit from the experiences of Chinese horticulturalists,” he told Gwadar Pro.

Mongolian Susan, Aglomena cat eye, Chinese banyan, blue potato bush, raspberry yellow, China palm and China berry (bakain) are commonly available in Pakistan plant markets. Chinaberry (locally known as bakain) is widely grown in Islamabad in front yards and backyard gardens as well as at public parks.

“As compared to local bakain, the Chinese berry is richer in shade and most commonly used for ornamental purposes,” said Javed Shah, a resident of G-13 Islamabad.

Besides ornamental plants, most ceramic, steel, and plastic plant pots are imported from China. There are also flower pots, metal flower pots, and cycle-shaped planters, being imported from China.

According to Manager Ayaz Khan, taxes and other expenses during import increase the prices of Chinese ornamental plants in Pakistan. “If Pakistani and Chinese experts start growing ornamental plants in Pakistan, people will start getting these plants at an economical price,” he said.

Imran’s free spirited decision making..

By Qamar Bashir

One million dollar question remained so far unanswered, why did Imran Khan dissolved the Punjab and KP assemblies? did he made an error of judgment, did he fell willingly in the trap laid down by the government, when first they lured him by pledging to go for general elections if the provincial assemblies were dissolved, but conveniently set aside their pledge soon after they were dissolved,   and later delayed the elections even at the cost of violating the constitution which necessitate holding of election with 90 days. Or, was this his most calculated and daring move, albeit full of risks, but he perhaps knows very well that the bigger the risk, the bigger the reward.

During our discussions in the Presidency, most of our colleagues described Imran Khan’s decision to dissolve the assemblies as hasty, lacking political wisdom, premature, and illogical. They believed that by doing so, he had rendered himself completely vulnerable and defenseless against brute state power which allegedly had the full blessing and support of the deep state. Other colleagues, however, were of the opinion that, while Imran Khan will pay dearly for his bold and unexpected decision, this is what great leaders do. If they make decisions based on common logic and common wisdom, they should become followers rather than leaders. Imran Khan’s decision to put himself in danger was an excellent political maneuver, but how?

The ultimate goal of all leaders and political parties is to gain power to put their manifesto into action which is possible only when they enjoy widespread public support. This was what exactly Imran Khan gained after he sacrificed his assemblies. Now he is enjoying widespread public support and sympathy from people all over the country and the world. In one of his interviews, when Hassan Nisar, a veteran journalist was asked, which one is  the most popular political party, he replied in his usual candid style that PTI is currently holding first, second and third place, PPPP is holding fourth place and PML(N) fifth place, most of the other political analysts and thinkers share the same opinion. On the other hand, by his free spirited decision pattern and his ability to build narrative and sold it successfully to the public he has put PDM on the defensive. They are discredited due to mismanagement of the economy, skyrocketing inflation, rising rates of unemployment, historic depreciation of the currency, rising wave of terrorism, rockbottom industrial and agricultural growth. This has led to their total annihilation of public support and impending election defeat, prompting the government to launch an all out offensive to eliminate Imran once for all and win back the country from his clutches and dole it out to their upcoming generation. But what if their goal of eliminating Imran proved elusive.

Imran Khan’s unconventional and risky moves have perplexed his opponents, who are accustomed to taking conventional and traditional moves devoid of creativity and foresight and expect the same from their political opponents. His ability to manage seemingly illogical decisions and convert them into success and ultimately winning the game is exceptionally well and proven, leaving his opponents totally disarmed.

The government has realised that it is impossible to defeat Imran politically, and going to elections at this point of time when he is drenched with popularity would be suicidal therefore it has chose to apply conventional solutions of registering over 134 FIRs, leaking audios and videos, registering fake and frivolous cases, intimidating the courts to refuse him bails, blame him for law and order situation, increasing cases of terrorism and in its guise delay the elections, buy time, bait Imran Khan with additional temptations, incentivize him to make mistakes and then use the state power to arrest and eliminate him from political chessboard.

Unlike other politicians who use politics to protect their vested interests and pass on the power to their future generations, Imran has no legacy to which he can pass on his political career. This is both a hot and cold fact. Hot because if he is removed, there will be no one to carry on his vision, and his party, which he has spent over thirty years building, will likely to cavedown in no time. If he lives long enough, he will be able to serve only another term in office before succumbing to aging. This leaves him with only five productive years to turn his vision into reality, and if the bus passes without him in the next general election, he would eventually leave the field exclusively for old timers and their political heirs and heiresses. Perhaps PDM is aware of this reality, so it is a matter of life and death for them to disqualify him from running for public office in the upcoming general elections by any means at their disposal.

Frustrated, the Interior Minister went so far as to say in his most recent interview that either Imran will die or they will die. Maryam Nawaz has vowed that elections will take place only after all cases against Nawaz Sharif are dropped as if they never happened, allowing him to lead the party in the next general election. While admitting that the Establishment no longer supports Imran, she and her party have launched a dangerous assault on the judiciary in order to arm twist it to exonerate Nawaz Sharif and arrest, imprison, and bar Imran Khan from running for any public office. The game of settling personal vendettas seemed to have no end while people sick and tired of it are waiting for a miracle to happen to save them and the country.

ISLAMABAD, MAR 31 /DNA/ – Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on Friday said the situation is improving and Pakistan will have 12 to 13 billion dollars in reserves by June.

He said that Pakistan is not like Sri Lanka and it will not default on its obligations.

Ishaq Dar said this while speaking at the oath-taking ceremony of the Islamabad Industrial Association (IIA).

PTI’s Azhar Mashwani returns home safely after 8 days

PTI leader Azhar Mashwani returned home on Friday, he announced on Twitter, more than a week after he was picked up.

“Alhumdullilah I have just returned home safe and sound,” Mashwani tweeted. “Your prayers, efforts, and support in these eight days have left us forever indebted.”

Mashwani added that he prayed that other “captive workers” also return home soon and they get to break their fasts with their families.

PTI Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhry confirmed to Dawn.com that Mashwani had returned home.

Yesterday, the Lahore High Court ordered the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to recover and produce Mashwani in court on April 3. Justice Aalia Neelum had passed the order on a habeas corpus petition filed by Mazharul Hassan, Mashwani’s brother.

That same day, PTI’s Insaf Youth Wing had called for a countrywide protest for the immediate release of Mashwani and his immediate production in the court.

He was picked up last week, apparently on charges of criticising the Punjab police and the caretaker government for allegedly using high-handed tactics against party workers.

The arrest of Mashwani, a former focal person for digital media in Punjab, prompted PTI chief Imran Khan to say, “enough is enough”, as he accused the authorities of abducting the party activist.

On March 26, after a sessions court had issued notices to the Lahore police chief on a petition seeking the registration of a case over the alleged abduction of Mashwani, city police had registered a case over the weekend against unidentified persons for kidnapping the PTI activist.

The FIR had stated that Mashwani went missing outside his house last week on March 23 when he was going to Zaman Park in a cab. However, his mobile phone was switched off after some time and his family and friends were not able to contact him.

His brother had claimed that some unidentified people kidnapped his brother and took him to an undisclosed location.
