Inflation surges to 31.4% as energy costs skyrocket: PBS

ISLAMABAD, OCT 02 (DNA) — Pakistan’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation rate jumped to 31.4% year-on-year, rising from 27.4% in August, data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) showed on Monday, amid skyrocketing energy costs.

Inflation rose for the first time in four months after the government raised fuel prices to meet the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) conditions for an ongoing $3 billion bailout programme.

The country is embarking on a tricky path to economic recovery under a caretaker government after a $3 billion loan programme approved by the IMF in July averted a sovereign debt default, but with conditions that complicated efforts to rein in inflation.

On a month-on-month basis, inflation climbed 2% for September, compared to an increase of 1.7% in August. Inflation during the first quarter of the current fiscal year averaged 29%. Quarterly average inflation for 1QFY24 hit 29.04% compared to 25.11% in 1QFY23.

PTI seeks CJP intervention to foil conspiracy to deprive people of suffrage sine die

PTI seeks CJP intervention

Says caretakers, ECP, PDM partners hell-bent violating constitution

ISLAMABAD: /DNA/ – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Core Committee urged that the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) should immediately intervene to safeguard the sanctity and respect of the Constitution, as the caretaker government, ECP and some political parties, which were part of the previous PDM coalition government, were hell-bent on depriving people of right to vote for an indefinite period.

PTI Core Committee discussed important issues including prevailing political situation in the country, courts’ proceedings of the cases against the Chairman PTI Imran Khan and the organizational strategy threadbare.

During the meeting, the party leadership requested the CJP to take special measures to protect the sanctity of the Constitution as holding elections within 90 days limit was a mandatory constitutional requirement in the case of premature dissolution of the National Assembly.

PTI Core Committee underlined that the entire state structure was bound to uphold the sanctity of the Constitution and implement it in its true letter and spirit.

The participants of the meeting pointed out that the caretaker government and the electoral watchdog had only 36 days to hold the forthcoming general elections; however, the caretaker government, electoral body and some political parties part of the previous PDM government were engaged in conspiracies to violate the sanctity of the constitution and usurp the right of the people of suffrage for an indefinite period.

The forum was of the view that according to the Constitution, the Supreme Court was responsible for maintaining and safeguarding the sanctity and respect of the Constitution.

The PTI core committee underlined that the CJP should take immediate notice of the sensitivity of the situation and make the state and government bodies bound by the constitution to conduct the free, fair and impartial general elections within the constitutionally mandated timeframe of 90 days.

Politically motivated economic decisions: avoiding tough choices is not possible: NBG

Politically motivated economic decisions: avoiding tough choices is not possible: NBG

–Economy can no longer support costs of bad decisions

–COAS support for better economic direction is appreciated

ISLAMABAD, OCT 02 (DNA) — Chairman of National Business Group Pakistan, President Pakistan Businessmen and Intellectuals Forum, and All Karachi Industrial Alliance, and former provincial minister Mian Zahid Hussain said on Monday that important economic decisions have remained subject to political interests for the past several decades.

Politically motivated economic choices have put the country’s economy at stake, and now the economy is no longer able to bear the burden of wrong decisions, he said. Mian Zahid Hussain said that the recent decision to reduce the price of petrol is correct, but further reduction is needed.

Talking to the business community, the veteran business leader said that even the most important decisions in the country have always been made under political pressure due to which now the entire nation is suffering.

Recruitments in the important national institutions were done under political interests, as a result of which 80 institutions, including PIA, Steel Mills, WAPDA, Railways, and others, are losing rupees one trillion annually, for which taxpayers are punished, he added.

The business leader said that lack of governance has put the country’s survival at stake and the majority of the people have become despondent about poverty and a better future.

Apart from developed nations and countries in the region, the African countries also do not allow political interference in economic decisions, but this has never been done in Pakistan, which has made a prosperous country a beggar, he observed.

Dozens of countries have made great progress by entrusting economic matters to experts instead of politicians, but unfortunately, this has never happened in Pakistan, he said.

He added that systems have been developed in developed countries to protect experts who make important economic decisions from political pressure, which is needed more than ever before in Pakistan.

Mian Zahid Hussain said that we should stop making decisions on a political basis in important sectors like health, education, and revenue so that instead of producing labourers, we can produce experts in different fields and stop tax evasion of four thousand billion rupees annually.

By giving priority to politics in every sector, the country has become bankrupt, and interest payments on debts have exceeded revenue receipts. Even the most important expenses are being met by taking out loans. In these circumstances, the Chief of Army Staff has decided to help the government save the country and put the economy back on track, which is being fully supported across the country.

Along with anti-terrorism operations, the Army is also working hard against corruption, smuggling, profiteering, hoarding, and speculation. It has discouraged wrongdoers, due to which the value of the rupee is improving and inflation is coming down.

The establishment of SIFC also has good prospects, and foreign investment of 100 billion dollars is expected. If the government and the army chief succeed in their intentions and save the country from disaster by correcting its economic direction, then the services of the army chief will be remembered for a long time as the benefactor of the country, he observed.

People are looking at him as their last hope, and the business community also has high expectations of him. — DNA

Govt prepares to notify 45% hike in gas tariff on IMF demand

ISLAMABAD, OCT 02 (DNA) — Caretaker government will announce to hike gas price on the demand of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Former PDM government had deferred the decision of the gas price hike.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has demanded to enhance the gas prices in the country by 45 percent. The IMF has demanded to generate 435 billion rupees revenue with increase in gas rates, sources said.

The lender has not been prepared to show flexibility in its demand for hike in the gas tariff, sources said. Sources shared that the government has prepared a strategy to save small consumers of gas from the rate hike by avoiding increase for them.

“Caretaker government will save 64 percent gas consumers from the price hike,” according to sources. The government is expected to announce 45 pct hike in gas rate with an official notification soon, sources said.

The gas tariff hike will come into force from back date of July 1st, sources said. “The gas consumers will clear their arrears from July to September bills. The gas tariff hike will also be enforced over domestic consumers having increased gas consumption”, sources said.

According to sources, commercial consumers, bread-makers and hotels will likely to consume gas at enhanced rate. The gas rates will likely to be enhanced for industrial consumers, CNG stations, fertilizer factories and steel industry.

The IMF has demanded an increase in gas tariff from 45 to 50 percent on account of ‘Fuel Adjustment Charges’ from July 01 while emphasizing a crackdown on electricity and gas theft to improve recovery. — DNA

Understanding the Power of Backlinks

Backlinks, also known as inbound or incoming links, are links from one website to another. They serve as votes of confidence, indicating that one website trusts and endorses another. Search engines like Google consider these votes when determining a website’s authority and relevance. In essence, backlinks act as a bridge that connects websites and boosts their SEO.

Dofollow vs. Nofollow: What’s the Difference?

Not all backlinks are created equal. Dofollow backlinks are the golden tickets of the SEO world. When a website links to yours with a dofollow tag, it tells search engines to follow the link and pass on the link equity. Nofollow links, on the other hand, don’t have the same SEO juice. They include a rel=”nofollow” attribute that instructs search engines to ignore the link.

The Role of Anchor Text in Backlinks

Anchor text is the clickable text in a hyperlink. It plays a crucial role in conveying the content’s relevance and context to search engines. Optimizing your anchor text for target keywords can significantly boost your SEO efforts.

The Quality-Quantity Balance in Backlink Building

While quantity can be enticing, it’s the quality of backlinks that truly matters. A few high-quality dofollow backlinks from authoritative websites can outweigh a multitude of low-quality ones. Focus on building a portfolio of top-notch backlinks.

The Importance of Relevance

Relevance is key when it comes to backlinks. A backlink from a website in a related niche carries more weight than one from an unrelated source. Ensure that your backlinks come from websites that align with your content and target audience.

Crafting a Backlink Strategy

A well-thought-out backlink strategy is essential for success. Identify your goals, target audience, and competitors. Then, create a roadmap to acquire backlinks strategically.

Guest Posting: An Effective Way to Secure Dofollow Backlinks

Guest posting allows you to contribute valuable content to other websites in exchange for dofollow backlinks. It’s a win-win strategy that can enhance your online presence.

Broken Link Building: A Sneaky but Effective Tactic

Find broken links on authoritative websites and offer to replace them with your relevant content. This tactic can earn you high-quality dofollow backlinks.

Building Relationships for Backlink Opportunities

Networking within your industry can lead to valuable backlink opportunities. Collaborate with influencers and other websites to establish mutually beneficial relationships.

Measuring Backlink Success

Use tools like Google Analytics and Search Console to track your backlink performance. Monitor your rankings, organic traffic, and click-through rates to gauge the impact of your efforts.

Avoiding Common Backlink Pitfalls

Stay away from black hat SEO tactics like buying backlinks or engaging in link schemes. These shortcuts can lead to penalties and harm your website’s reputation.

The Future of Backlinks in SEO

As search engines evolve, the importance of backlinks is likely to endure. Stay updated with SEO trends to adapt your backlink strategy accordingly.

Conclusion

In conclusion, high-quality dofollow SEO backlinks are the backbone of a successful SEO strategy. They can catapult your website to the top of search engine rankings, driving organic traffic and increasing your online visibility. Remember to focus on quality over quantity, relevance, and ethical link-building practices.

Ramiz Raja warns Pakistan team ahead of World Cup

Ramiz Raja warns Pakistan team ahead of World Cup

Pakistan lost to New Zealand in World Cup 2023 warm-up despite scoring 345

Former Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ramiz Raja expressed strong criticism of the Pakistan cricket team following their valiant effort but ultimate defeat against New Zealand in a warm-up match during the Cricket World Cup 2023.

Raja lamented Pakistan’s growing trend of losing matches and emphasised that if the bowlers fail to deliver on the grand stage, the team will need to aim for scores exceeding 400 runs.

“I know it was just a practice game, but a win is a win. And winning becomes a habit. But I feel Pakistan are now getting a habit of losing. First they lost in Asia Cup, and now here. Pakistan scored 345 and it was a great run-chase. If these are the pitches – and you will get such pitches in India – you will have to score 400 if your bowling keeps misfiring like this. You will have to change your tactics, take risks. And we don’t do that. We play defensively for first 10-15 overs and then shift gears,” he told reporters.

In the encounter, Rachin Ravindra and the returning Kane Williamson played pivotal roles in New Zealand’s chase of 345 runs, ultimately securing a five-wicket victory in the World Cup warm-up match on Friday.

In pursuit of their target of 346 runs for victory, New Zealand faced an early setback but recovered as Ravindra contributed 97 runs and Williamson added 54 runs, forging a critical 137-run partnership that put their team on a winning course. They successfully reached the target with 6.2 overs to spare in the match held in Hyderabad.

While Mohammed Rizwan’s impressive century and Babar Azam’s resilient knock propelled Pakistan to a total of 345-5 after choosing to bat first, the New Zealand batters made the challenging target appear chasable, particularly in the absence of Pakistan’s pace spearhead, Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Williamson, who returned to the field following a six-month hiatus due to a knee injury and participated in the match solely as a batsman, showcased his prowess during his 50-ball innings before retiring out.

ISLAMABAD, OCT 2: The United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat) and the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat Pakistan (AKAHP), commemorated World Habitat Day 2023 in accordance with United Nations General Assembly Resolution 40/202. This observance served as a moment of reflection on the condition of our towns and cities, as well as an opportunity to explore how urban areas can position their development to better serve their residents. The event was attended by partners and stakeholders from Government of Pakistan, United Nations, foreign dignitaries, INGOs, and academia.

World Habitat Day is observed on the first Monday of October every year, with a range of activities, events, and discussions happening globally on urban sustainability. Known as Urban October, this event provides an opportunity for people worldwide to engage in conversations about the challenges and opportunities arising from the rapid changes in our cities and towns, with the goal to emphasize on the responsibility in shaping the future of our habitats and addressing the impacts of climate change and its induced disasters.

Abdullah Fadil, Acting Resident Coordinator and Country Director of UNICEF Pakistan emphasized in his keynote address a commitment to sustainable urban development. He underscored the importance of urban strategies and policies that enhance cities’ capacities as drivers of socio-economic progress, ultimately leading to the creation of resilient urban economies.

Mr. Jawed Ali Khan, Habitat Programme Manager, highlighted that Pakistan is fortunate to have 30 percent of its population constituting as a “youth bulge.” Harnessing the potential of this youth demographic is essential for advancing urban economic development. For economic growth and recovery to be sustainable,it is crucial to develop a green recovery framework that scales up private and public investments to finance the transition to a climate-neutral economy. Cities all over the world have already embarked on this journey through implementing various models. UN-Habitat believes that these models can be localized and scaled up through the Global Partnership for local Investment, where experiences are shared to build a local finance framework for cities and communities, to help distribute existing funding and finance to where it can deliver the greatest impact.

In her speech, Ms. Nusrat Nasab, Chief Executive Officer of AKAH Pakistan, shared her thoughts on fostering urban resilience as a complex yet crucial endeavor. Building climate-resilient habitats is not just an investment in our future; it’s a commitment to fostering sustainable growth and global recovery in a world shaped by environmental stewardship. The Aga Khan Agency for Habitat plays a vital role in leading efforts to create thriving habitats. By working in partnership with communities, government and stakeholders, employing sustainable practices, and addressing the unique challenges of each habitat, AKAH can contribute significantly to improving living conditions, transforming dreams of climate-resilient habitats into the reality of growth, recovery, and a brighter future for communities living in rural, urban and peri urban areas, paving the way for a sustainable tomorrow.

Dr. Bilal Anwar, CEO of NDRMF, explained that resilient urban economies exhibit adaptability and sustainability in theface of setbacks. Pakistani cities have consistently demonstrated their resilience when confronted with economic challenges, natural disasters, and health crises. Climate change, environmental degradation, and resource constraints are global concerns necessitating local solutions. Resilient cities in Pakistan are leading the way by adopting sustainable practices, investing in green infrastructure, and advocating for environmentally responsible policies.

Security personnel involved in ‘cross-border smuggling to face court martial’

Security personnel involved in 'cross-border smuggling to face court martial'

Caretaker Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti said Monday that any personnel of security forces found involved in cross-border smuggling would be court-martialed.

Pakistan has intensified its crackdown on smugglers involved in transporting commodities and dollars to Afghanistan, especially in the last few months when havoc was wreaked on the economy.

The crackdown bore fruit as speculation diminished and the rupee recovered sharply against the greenback to become the best-performing currency globally, but analysts fear another round of depreciation as they are skeptical about the long-term effects of administrative measures.

“If I say that security forces weren’t involved in [smuggling], it won’t be right as the [smuggled] items are transported via trucks, not camels,” Bugti said during a press conference in Islamabad.

He mentioned that Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir had told military personnel that whoever is found involved in illegal cross-border trade would face the music.

“Pakistan’s army chief had told his people very clearly: there won’t only be court-martials, but those involved in such activities would also be sent to jail,” the interior minister mentioned.

Bugti told reporters that the army’s accountability mechanism is not made public and that’s why it is not in the knowledge of the masses.

“But the army has its own accountability [system]; and we have not just seen it in this instance, but post May 9 as well,” the interim interior minister noted.

‘Iron fists’

The minister mentioned that the government was taking action against smugglers and that they were also appreciating law enforcers for their part in the crackdown on the people involved in illegal activities.

“The state will deal with hawala, hundi, and other illegal activities with iron fists,” he said.

He said the authorities had recovered 8,000 metric tonnes of sugar, and action was also being taken against petrol pump stations for selling sub-standard fuel.

The minister said a database was being made of the trucks being used in smuggling.

Bugti said the government strongly discourages the usage of hawal and hundi. He mentioned that 168 FIRs have been registered against people involved in the dollar’s illegal trade.

‘Nawaz’s return to politics encouraging’

The minister, in the same presser, mentioned that if Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif plans to return to the country and partake in politics, it would be “encouraging”.

“I am still saying, despite what PML-N leaders have said about me, that Nawaz Sharif is the leader who came back to the country with his daughter; if he was afraid of going to jail, he would not have come back.”

The interim interior minister claimed that the government has to treat every Pakistani citizen in line with the law and the same would be done with Nawaz, a three-time prime minister.

Bugti had invited strong criticism from the top PML-N leadership when he said that if Nawaz was not granted bail, then the authorities would arrest the former PM from the airport.

After hard-hitting statements from the PML-N leaders, the minister said his “statement was given a political colour out of context. The caretaker government has no political agenda”.
