The Issue of Unemployment in Pakistan

The Issue of Unemployment in Pakistan

KOMAL ASLAM

Many young people not having jobs is a big problem in the world. This is also a challenge in Pakistan right now. To solve this, we need to look at the main reasons for it and find ways to help young people get jobs. This will not only benefit them but also help the country grow economically and socially. The lack of good education and job skills is a big reason why young people can’t find work.

This is a serious problem because it can lead to hopelessness and misery.A report says that one-third of young people in Pakistan are unemployed. Even those who are educated are having a hard time finding jobs that match their qualifications. Many people apply for jobs, but there are not enough positions available. This can lead to frustration and, in some cases, involvement in crime.High unemployment rates also make young people vulnerable to crime groups. Some end up working in dangerous conditions or being forced into illegal activities. The situation is made worse by inflation and a lack of opportunities.

The government needs to take action to lower inflation, stabilize the currency, and provide better education and job training for young people. This will help create more opportunities and reduce stress. Population growth also needs to be managed, taking lessons from other countries like Iran and Bangladesh.Empowering women in the workforce is crucial for economic progress. The current economic situation discourages people from starting their own businesses. Encouraging startups and providing a good environment for them is important for creating jobs.Innovative solutions, like focusing on the gig economy and supporting startups, can help address unemployment. Technical skills should be a priority for young people to improve their job prospects. The mismatch between job requirements and skills needs to be addressed through better education and training.

Youth unemployment is a big social problem that can lead to crimes, homelessness, drug addiction, and family tension. It also negatively impacts the economy by reducing consumption and investment. Managing population growth, empowering women, and supporting entrepreneurship are key steps to improve the situation. Many young people in Pakistan don’t have jobs, and this is causing big problems for the country. There are different reasons for this issue.First, the government doesn’t have enough money to spend on creating jobs, especially for young people. Also, the number of young people looking for jobs is increasing, but there aren’t enough opportunities. The lack of funds, slow economic growth, and problems with infrastructure make it even harder to create new jobs. As the population grows, there are fewer chances for young people to find work. This makes competition for jobs very tough, and many young people struggle to find good jobs. This unemployment issue affects both rural and urban areas in Pakistan. The future of the country and its progress are at risk because many young people can’t find work. Pakistan has a lot of young people, around 62 million, but about half of them don’t have jobs. This is one of the highest rates of youth unemployment in the world. One reason for this is that not many people in Pakistan have formal education only 43%. Because of this, many young people can’t find jobs that match their skills and qualifications. The lack of good education and training programs also means that young people don’t have the skills they need for many jobs. This leads to long-term unemployment, where people can’t find meaningful work.

Pakistan’s economy is not doing well, and there isn’t much money to create new jobs. The country also has a weak job market with low wages and job security. Many young people end up in poorly paid and insecure jobs that don’t provide enough for them or their families. The informal sector, which is not well-regulated, doesn’t offer good job opportunities for young people either.Political problems in the country make it harder for businesses to grow and invest, creating even fewer job opportunities. Many young people also lack resources like money, technology, and mentors to help them find good jobs. The government’s lack of investment in key areas like industry and agriculture also means fewer job possibilities.Another big issue is that many young people can’t get loans or money to start their own businesses. The country’s financial sector is not well-developed, making it hard for young people to become entrepreneurs. Another big issue is that many young people can’t get loans or money to start their own businesses. The country’s financial sector is not well-developed, making it hard for young people to become entrepreneurs. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has made things worse by causing many companies to close down, leading to more job losses. There are many reasons why young people in Pakistan don’t have jobs, including a lack of education, political problems, and economic issues. To fix this, the government needs to address the root causes and find ways to create more jobs. Pakistan should also encourage international investors to come to the country and create more job opportunities. Prioritizing education and job possibilities for young people is crucial for a better economic future in Pakistan.

U.S. Engagement with Ukraine

U.S. Engagement with Ukraine

Dr. Muhammad AkramZaheer

As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues, people are getting tired of emotional appeals about Ukrainian bravery and Russian actions. Republicans have valid concerns: they want to cut government spending, make sure U.S. aid to Ukraine isn’t misused by corrupt officials, and figure out where helping Ukraine fits in U.S. priorities. One thing most Americans agree on is the importance of a strong U.S. military. However, President Biden is providing enough aid for Ukraine to keep fighting but not enough to win. There’s a strong argument from conservatives to increase U.S. assistance to Ukraine. For a relatively small cost, Americans can support Ukraine in a war that NATO was worried about. It’s important to note that a significant portion of U.S. aid to Ukraine goes to American companies that produce weapons for Kyiv. Engaging with Ukraine is also revealing weaknesses in the U.S. defense system. To fund defense adequately, changes to entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare are necessary. Both Democrats and Republicans need to reconsider their stance on entitlement reform, as these programs make up a large portion of federal spending. If not addressed, the cost of entitlements will limit spending on defense and other domestic programs.

There’s also a need for better border policies. Many Americans don’t understand why the U.S. military doesn’t protect the country’s borders. Immigration policy is closely tied to foreign policy and the U.S. economy. A majority of Americans think the U.S. is doing a poor job managing its borders, and there’s a surge in illegal border crossings. The military is restricted by the Posse Comitatus Act from acting as a domestic police force, but political leaders should invest in border security. This includes more funding for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency, as well as technology to track migrant movements. Cooperation with Mexico and addressing the root causes of migration are also crucial. Failure to regulate immigration properly hinders the U.S. from maximizing its geopolitical opportunities, especially in North American cooperation. Clearer immigration policies could lead to stronger collaboration with neighboring countries, benefiting the U.S. economy. However, until Americans are confident in border control, they may be hesitant to support these cooperation opportunities. According to experts at the Brennan Center, many Americans are confused about why the U.S. military doesn’t protect the country’s borders. Republicans could improve their policies on this issue. Immigration is crucial for foreign policy and the U.S. economy. A survey in January 2021 by Pew Research Institute showed that 68% of Americans believe the U.S. is not managing its borders well. Indeed, since January 2020, about 200,000 people try to enter the U.S. illegally every month through the Mexican border, the highest in 20 years. Contrary to what the media says, most of these people are adults, not kids. The 1878 Posse ComitatusAct stops the military from acting like a police force within the U.S. Generals, who are already busy, don’t want to protect the borders, fearing it might harm people’s respect for the military. To get more support for U.S. activities abroad, leaders need to show they can put more effort and resources into border security. A survey in January 2023 found that most Americans want to give more money to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency. It’s not just about money and more people. Over 60% of recent migrants aren’t from Mexico or Central America but start their journey in places like Colombia, Cuba, Peru, and Venezuela. The U.S. should invest in surveillance and technology to track migrants in Central America, speed up asylum claims in new immigration courts, work more with Mexico to stop migrants passing through, and engage with migrants’ home countries to solve problems and help those who don’t meet U.S. immigration rules return. Not handling immigration properly makes the U.S. miss its biggest opportunity for North American cooperation. Politicians should worry more about Mexico becoming unsafe and find creative ways to make Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. work together in energy, labor, and manufacturing. With better immigration policies, we can relocate supply chains to Mexico, strengthen energy grids in California and Texas by trading energy with Canada and Mexico, and create opportunities for neighbors to prosper, boosting the U.S. economy. But until Americans trust that the U.S. controls its borders, they may not support these cooperation opportunities.

The world that the United States and its friends made after World War II made America safer and richer. But we must remember that if the U.S. doesn’t make sure this global order is followed, someone else will, probably China. If China takes charge, the world could become dangerous. China, along with its authoritarian allies like Russia and Iran, might gather enough military and economic power to force a repressive vision on the world. To make things better, the U.S. should rejoin the Trans-Pacific Partnership, make and approve other trade agreements, spend more on defense while fixing entitlements and reducing national debt, secure the U.S.-Mexican border, and help countries fighting for their freedom. These are big goals. Fred Kagan, a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, says people don’t want to die for the international order because it’s too vague. But convincing voters to support a foreign policy that helps other countries might not be as hard as politicians think. They should focus on concrete arguments based on U.S. national interest. The Biden administration and some Republican leaders are making misleading appeals that say internationalism makes the U.S. weaker or that caring about the U.S. national interest means ignoring the world. This is not true. The choices the U.S. makes internationally affect its own well-being. Right now, leaders are making confusing foreign policy decisions that make the country less safe and less prosperous, and fixing them will be difficult later on. The U.S. is divided politically, and many people are confused and disappointed. A Pew poll from June-July 2023 found that only 16% of Americans trust the federal government, the lowest in 70 years. Only 10% feel hopeful about politics. In an August Wall Street Journal poll, 93% of likely Republican voters thought the U.S. is headed in the wrong direction. These are not good results, but they also present an opportunity for good policies because people are clearly unhappy. The solution is not to adopt policies that give up on trade, weaken the military, leave the U.S.-Mexican border in chaos, and stop helping deserving allies. Americans still want the U.S. to be a leader in the world for the sake of the country and their own safety and prosperity. U.S. leaders need to prove they know how to do it.

Nawaz to leave country before elections, claims Aitzaz Ahsan

Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif of the Pakistan Muslim League is seen at his residence in central London in this October 19, 2006 file photograph. ISLAMABAD, DEC 30 /DNA/ – Veteran politician and senior lawyer Aitzaz Ahsan has predicted that PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif would leave the country before elections and watch the results unfold from there.

In the interview, the PPP stalwart also claimed that JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman was “retreating [from elections]”, claiming that from the two drums that are beaten — either of victory or retreat — Rehman seemed to be “beating the drum of a retreat”.

Previously, the lawyer had also called Sharif a “ladla”(favoured) and had claimed that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the caretaker government were trying to ensure Nawaz Sharif wins a two-thirds majority in next year’s general elections.

Nawaz, who had returned to Pakistan on October 21 after spending four years in self-imposed exile, said he had “no wish for revenge” and stressed on beginning a “new journey” towards growth.

‘Bat symbol’

As far as the PTI’s on-going tussle with the election commission goes, Ahsan said it would be unwise for the election watchdog to pursue this matter any further.

The ECP and the PTI have been exchanging blows over the past few days. The controversy stems from the electoral watchdog’s earlier decision to strip PTI of its symbol following the annulment of its intra-party elections for not complying with the Elections Act and the party’s own constitution.

PTI’s new chairman, Gohar Khan, had also claimed there was a conspiracy brewing against the party to snatch its electoral symbol ‘bat’ and exclude it from the upcoming elections.

“Is the election commission conducting elections or contesting them?” Ahsan asked, adding that the Ccommission cannot — and should not — go to high court regarding the bat symbol against PTI as it will show its bias against the party.

The lawyer was referring to the ECP’s decision to challenge the Peshawar High Court’s (PHC) order reinstating the PTI’s election symbol. Sources familiar with the matter told the ECP initially considered appealing directly to the Supreme Court but ultimately opted for a review petition with the PHC, which is scheduled to revisit the case on Jan 9. The ECP is also on notice to appear before the bench on the date.

The commission has yet to adhere to the PHC’s specific directives, including publishing PTI’s intra-party elections certificate on the ECP’s official website and reinstating the party’s election symbol.

Ahsan further added that disputing a judgment would create a chain, “If the High Court reverses the decision of the District Court, should the District Judge go to the Supreme Court to ask why the High Court has given a decision against his decision?”=DNA

Ex-DG ISI skips inquiry commission’s hearing for second time

Ex-DG ISI skips inquiry commission’s hearing for second time

ISLAMABAD, DEC 30 /DNA/ -Former director general (DG) Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lieutenant General (retd) Faiz Hamid has yet again skipped the hearing of the Faizabad Dharna Inquiry Commission (FDIC), as he did not appear before the commission on Friday, The News reported on Saturday quoting sources.

This was the second time that the former ISI chief has remained absent from the hearing being conducted by the inquiry commission, which earlier summoned him in the second week of December this year and then on December 29, sources said.

The commission has, therefore, issued the former spy chief another summon notice through the Defence Ministry, ordering him to cooperate in the inquiry, the sources maintained.

The former ISI chief has now been asked to record his statement in the second week of January 2024 for the third time.

Gen (retd) Faiz is being summoned to record his statement on the sit-in staged by the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) at the Faizabad flyover in Islamabad in November 2017.

Meanwhile, Joint Director General Intelligence Bureau (IB) Sajid Kiani had, on December 19, recorded his three-hour-long statement before the inquiry commission wherein he ruled out any aspect of interference from any other institution during the operation against the TLP, the sources had said.

Sajid Kiani was serving as senior superintendent of police (Operations) in Islamabad in 2017 at the time of the Faizabad sit-in.

The probe panel was constituted on the order of the Supreme Court of Pakistan under the chair of retired IGP Akhtar Ali Shah after the apex court rejected the fact-finding committee report constituted by the government.

On November 15, Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa had remarked that the commission would be empowered to summon anyone, including former army chiefs, prime ministers and chief justices.

It is important to note that the commission has also probed former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, ex-interior minister Ahsan Iqbal, then-secretary to PM Fawad Hasan Fawad and other senior officials serving in Islamabad and Punjab who were involved in the episode.

Faizabad verdict

On February 6, 2019, a two-member bench of the apex court comprising the now-CJP Isa and Justice Mushir Alam recommended that persons, issuing an edict or fatwa to harm another person or put another person in the harm’s way must be dealt with iron hand and prosecuted under relevant laws.

It also ruled that the intelligence agencies must not exceed their respective mandates. Later, the bench disposed of a suo moto case regarding the 2017 Faizabad sit-in staged by the TLP.

The 43-page verdict issued by the two-judge bench and published on the apex court’s website read: “Every citizen and political party has the right to assemble and protest provided such assembly and protest is peaceful and complies with the law imposing reasonable restrictions in the interest of public order.

“The right to assemble and protest is circumscribed only to the extent that it infringes on the fundamental rights of others, including their right to free movement and to hold and enjoy property.”

In November 2017, the top court had taken suo motu notice of the three-week-long sit-in, which was held against a change in the finality-of-Prophethood oath, termed by the government as a clerical error, when the government passed the Elections Act 2017.

The sit-in was called off after the protesters reached an agreement with the government.=DNA

PTI alleges conspiracies being hatched to snatch electoral symbol ‘bat’

PTI alleges conspiracies being hatched to snatch electoral symbol ‘bat’

The PTI on Friday alleged that conspiracies were being hatched to snatch its iconic electoral symbol ‘bat’ and exclude the party from the February 8 general elections.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the PTI have been in “bat blood” over the past few days. The controversy stems from the electoral watchdog’s earlier decision to strip PTI of its symbol following the annulment of its intra-party elections for not complying with the Elections Act and the party’s own constitution.

Earlier this week, the Peshawar High Court suspended the commission’s order and directed it to publish the certificate of PTI’s intra-party polls on its website “keeping in view the urgency, that a political party has been denuded of its symbol, meaning hearby that aspirants from the general public who were willing to vote for the petitioners’ party were divested of their right to vote as per their choice”.

The PHC verdict was criticised by several political leaders, including Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Fazl’s Maulana Fazlur Rehman and PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad today, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan said the ‘bat’ was not just the PTI’s electoral symbol but was also the symbol of the expectations of the Pakistani nation.

“The Supreme Court has settled that snatching the electoral symbol is equivalent to dissolving a political party and this right only lies with the apex court in Article 17 [of the Constitution],” he said.

“All these political leaders [of the Pakistan Democratic Movement] won’t be able to gain anything on February 8. They will all lose their seats if free, fair and transparent elections are conducted,” Barrister Gohar said. “Therefore they are trying to take the ‘bat’ away from us.”

The PTI chairman stressed that he was a representative of Imran, asserting that the former prime minister “was, is and will always remain our leader” irrespective of wherever he was.

The lawyer highlighted that the highest number of nomination papers had been filed by PTI candidates. “If you take away our electoral symbol, will all of them contest as independent candidates? If this happens, who will be responsible for horse-trading after the polls?”

Gohar further pointed out that the upcoming elections were the most crucial for the country and derailing them would result in a huge loss to Pakistan. He also played videos of other political leaders criticising the PHC verdict, alleging that they had attacked the judiciary.

“Is it not better for the judiciary to look into this matter?” he asked, claiming that conspiracies were being hatched to exclude the PTI from the electoral process.

Meanwhile, PTI leader Latif Khosa lamented the “leniencies” being shown to PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif. “We have seen how his nomination papers were accepted […] how is it possible when the SC disqualified him for life?”

“On the other end, the nomination papers of none of our candidates were accepted. This is the worst poll rigging in the history of Pakistan,” he said, warning that the entire world was watching this in real time.

Khosa further stated that an electoral symbol was extremely important as it was used for the identification of a political party, particularly in areas where literacy rates were low.

“By taking away the symbol, you will deprive the nation of its fundamental rights,” he added.

IHC allows PTI leaders to hold election meetings with Imran in jail
Earlier in the day, the Islamabad High Court granted PTI leaders and lawyers permission to meet Imran — who is incarcerated at Adiala Jail — and hold election meetings.

The order was passed by Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb on a petition filed by Barrister Gohar seeking permission to hold meetings with Imran to strategise ahead of the elections on ticket distribution for the National and provincial assemblies.

The plea also requested the court to instruct the superintendent of Adiala Jail to ensure privacy for Imran during his consultations with his legal team.

Earlier, PTI Chairman Gohar Khan had said the decision to allot tickets would still be taken by Imran. Meanwhile, Barrister Ali Zafar had asserted that PTI workers in jail would be prioritised when it came to the allotment of tickets.

Today, Attorney-General for Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Usman Awan, PTI lawyers and the Adiala Jail superintendent appeared in the IHC.

At the outset, PTI counsel Shoaib Shaheen said the party needed to hold discussions for the allotment of 700 tickets while the AGP raised objections to the maintainability of the plea.

Justice Aurangzeb expressed displeasure at Awan’s arguments and asked: “Is the additional note from the Supreme Court insufficient for you? Do you want me to write a note against you as well?”

He passed these remarks in reference to Justice Athar Minallah’s additional note in the cipher case. In his note, the SC judge had highlighted that it was the Election Commission of Pakistan and the government’s duty to ensure that the public was facilitated in expressing its will through a “genuine election”, adding that it was also bound to ensure that there was no perception of oppression or repression against one political party while others were treated favourably.

Mentioning these remarks, Justice Aurangzeb said the AGP and advocate general were representing the caretaker government and should therefore be impartial.

“A terrible system is being run under the interim government where even consultation on elections is not allowed,” he remarked, asking if the caretakers wanted to “derail the polls”.

Subsequently, the court allowed PTI lawyers, including Chairman Gohar Khan, to hold consultations with Imran in jail. The court also passed orders for a meeting between Gohar and the ex-premier to be held under the supervision of the jail superintendent.

“Permission for consultations on polls is a fundamental right,” Justice Aurangzeb said, stressing that the caretaker government should be “neutral” during elections.

“Opposing meetings between PTI chairman and Imran raises questions on the neutrality of the interim set-up,” the judge added and disposed of the petition.

Talking to reporters, PTI lawyer Shaheen said the caretakers “are actually chair takers and everyone can see on whose orders they are functioning”.

“They all have a problem with the fact that Imran Khan and the nation are on one page. Today, the public is standing with Imran Khan,” he asserted, adding that the ECP and elite political parties were seeing their defeat.

“What is the capacity or credibility left of this puppet caretaker government?” the lawyer asked. He also criticised the police maltreatment of PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi outside Adiala Jail earlier this week.

“We have made a mockery of ourselves in the entire world,” Shaheen added.
