Chinese firm signs deal on data centres, digital services with Pakistan

China-Pak companies sign $43 mln new energy order

BEIJING, Oct 28 (DNA):Chinese industrial e-commerce firm Beijing United Information Technology (IBI) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Pakistan’s Sindh province to pursue public-private partnerships in safe-city projects, green data centres and digital services, according to the company.

The agreement was signed on 15 October on the sidelines of the Sindh Investment Conference in Shanghai. It covers the digitalisation of enterprises, factories, industrial parks and ports in the province, IBI said.

Sindh, home to Karachi, accounts for more than 27 per cent of Pakistan’s economy, according to Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah.

The provincial government used the conference to seek investment in energy, manufacturing, agriculture and emerging technologies. It said 34 memorandums and agreements were signed at the conference. Liu Junzhai, director and senior vice president of IBI, and Sindh’s investment secretary Raja Khurram Shahzad Umar signed the agreement. Pakistan’s ambassador to China, Syed Ali Asad Gilani, attended the signing.

The deal extends IBI’s industrial cooperation in Pakistan to the provincial level and ties it to the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which focuses on industrial and agricultural cooperation. It also brings the company’s cross-border industrial-belt strategy into South Asia, IBI told CEN.

IBI told CEN it plans to bring its suppliers and business partners into Sindh.

Syed Qasim Naveed Qamar, the chief minister’s special assistant on investment and public-private partnership, said the province would set up a mechanism to identify potential projects and requirements, according to the company statement.
