LUMS establishes center to study air pollution in Punjab

LAHORE, Oct 11 (DNA):The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) established the Center for Air Pollution and Environment (CAPE) to investigate the causes of air pollution in Punjab through a multi-year research study.

The study will be conducted at various locations across the province to identify major pollution sources and assess their contribution to air contamination. The project also includes setting up a state-of-the-art laboratory for chemical analysis of air pollutants.

Dr. Qasim Imtiaz, a faculty member of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at LUMS, is the founding director of the centre. Dr. Farah Saeed, Dr. Shahana Khurshid and Dr. Walter Schwarzbauer are also part of the team.

The inaugural ceremony brought together LUMS leadership, researchers, government officials, air quality experts and development partners to discuss Punjab’s air pollution challenges and the need for evidence-based solutions.

LUMS Provost Dr. Tariq Mahmood Jadoon highlighted the importance of scientific research in tackling air pollution.

Dr. Qasim Imtiaz said regular data collection was essential to measuring pollution levels and developing effective solutions. He added that CAPE would collaborate with the government, researchers and local communities to implement targeted measures aimed at protecting public health.
