KARACHI, 29 SEP (DNA) — The bodies of three fishermen who went missing a day earlier after a boat carrying five fishermen capsized in the sea near Sea View’s Nishan-i-Pakistan monument were recovered on Tuesday. According to a statement issued by the Edhi Foundation, two of the fishermen were rescued safely on Monday evening, while three went missing after the boat capsized.
The foundation said the bodies of all three missing fishermen had been recovered on Tuesday, with the deceased identified as 55-year-old Abdul Salam, 30-year-old Muna, and 35-year-old Saeed alias Kalu. The bodies were shifted to Jinnah Hospital through Edhi ambulances.
The Edhi marine rescue operation, which was underway since Monday night, concluded with the recovery of the third body. Earlier, the foundation said the bodies of two of the missing fishermen were recovered, and a search operation was underway for the third. Rescue 1122 spokesperson Hassaan Ul Haseeb Khan told Dawn that the incident occurred after the boat developed a fault at sea.
He said the authorities had also sought assistance from the Pakistan Navy and Coast Guard for the rescue operation. In May, 18 people were rescued after their boat capsized in the sea near Karachi’s Ibrahim Hyderi. In January, seven people were rescued, and four remained missing after a merchant vessel collided with a fishing boat off Karachi’s Manora.
The same month, a boat carrying eight Karachi residents capsized in the open sea near Keti Bandar. Last year, a fisherman drowned when his boat capsized in the open sea near Port Qasim due to strong winds. — DNA
