KP Police reunite Sri Lankan woman with daughter

PESHAWAR, Jan 10 (APP):In a heartwarming turn of events, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police facilitated a long-awaited reunion between a Sri Lankan mother and her 25-year-old daughter.

The woman, once married to a resident of district Khyber, was granted custody of her daughter following a decision made in accordance with the girl’s own wishes.

According to a district police spokesman, years ago, the Sri Lankan woman and her former husband, a native of Khyber, had tied the knot in the Gulf, where their daughter was born. However, the father later returned to Pakistan with the child, leaving the mother separated from her daughter for decades.

Fearing for her daughter’s well-being, the determined mother journeyed to Pakistan and sought the help of the district police officer of Khyber.

Responding to her plea, the police organized a traditional jirga to mediate the matter.

During the proceedings, the jirga empowered the daughter to choose her guardian. Expressing her heartfelt desire, the young woman opted to return to her mother’s care. Respecting her choice, the authorities handed her over to her mother, marking an emotional reunion.

Before departing for Sri Lanka, the mother shared a heartfelt video message, expressing her profound gratitude to the Khyber police.

She praised their hospitality, fairness, and commitment to justice, hailing their efforts as a testament to their integrity.

In a statement issued here on Friday, the District Police Officer of Khyber emphasized the importance of safeguarding individual rights, declaring that the police were duty-bound to uphold the principles of justice enshrined in the law.

He reiterated that in this case, too, the police acted within the bounds of the constitution and respected the young woman’s wishes, ensuring her right to choose her path.

This act of compassion and justice by the Khyber police served as a reminder of the power of empathy and the rule of law in bridging divides and reuniting families.
