BUCHAREST, OCT 27 /DNA/ — Romanian President Nicușor Dan issued a forceful condemnation of Russian involvement in acts of sabotage on Romanian territory, accusing Moscow of waging a coordinated hybrid war against Europe and warning that recent provocations in the Black Sea mark a dangerous new escalation.
In a statement, Dan said he condemns “in the strongest possible terms any involvement by the Russian Federation in acts of sabotage on Romanian territory,” calling such actions “unacceptable” and a “serious violation of our country’s sovereignty and security.”
The president linked the sabotage to a broader Russian campaign against European democracies, citing electoral interference, disinformation, information warfare, cyberattacks, and acts of sabotage as components of Moscow’s hybrid strategy. He warned that in recent weeks Russia has “reached a new level of escalation and provocation against civilian shipping in the Black Sea.”
“These are not isolated, unrelated incidents. They are part of a premeditated and coordinated campaign intended to sow divisions within our societies and undermine European states’ commitment to their own security and our collective defense,” Dan said.
The statement follows an investigation into a fire at the Carfil industrial site, which Romanian authorities have treated as sabotage. Dan commended professionals from SRI, MAI, DIICOT, and DGIA for identifying both those who started the fire and those ultimately responsible, and he highlighted the role of social media in hostile recruitment efforts.
“The investigations into the sabotage at Carfil demonstrate once again how frequently hostile entities now use social media to recruit people with the intention of manipulating them, even to the point of involving them in illegal activities,” he said, urging citizens to scrutinize online content and be aware of such dangers.
Dan pledged that the Romanian state would act decisively to prevent such incidents, identify those involved, and protect citizens and critical infrastructure, while continuing close cooperation with NATO allies and European Union partners.
“Our response must be united, coordinated, and credible, grounded in solidarity and our ability to act together,” he said, thanking international partners for their cooperation with Romanian agencies.
