ISLAMABAD – In a historic diplomatic milestone, Pakistan has appointed its first-ever Ambassador to Armenia. Pakistan’s current Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Ambassador Shafqat Ali Khan presented his credentials to the President of Armenia, formally assuming the role as Pakistan’s non-resident Ambassador to the country.
This appointment follows the establishment of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Armenia last year. For decades, Pakistan refrained from appointing an envoy to Yerevan due to strained ties between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Pakistan has consistently supported Azerbaijan’s position in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, particularly during the 44-day Patriotic War, which saw Azerbaijan regain territories previously under Armenian control.
Governor officials and analysts view this move as a reflection of changing regional dynamics. With Armenia and Azerbaijan now on improved terms, Pakistan has taken the step to normalize its own relations with Armenia while maintaining its strong partnership with Azerbaijan.
Ambassador Shafqat Ali Khan’s dual role—serving as Ambassador to the UAE and now as non-resident Ambassador to Armenia—underscores Pakistan’s intent to expand its diplomatic footprint without establishing a full-fledged mission in Yerevan. The appointment is expected to open new avenues for cooperation in trade, culture, and regional connectivity.
