ISLAMABAD, AUG 5: Pakistan is facilitating behind-the-scenes contacts between the US and Iran, Islamabad’s ambassador to Russia, Faisal Niaz Tirmizi, said on Wednesday.
“Pakistan believes in diplomacy. And that’s what we do, and that’s what we say. We like to work with all the regional partners who are invested in peace in the region,” Tirmizi said in an interview with Russia’s state-owned news agency TASS, stressing his country’s role as a channel of communication between the two warring parties.
Furthermore, he underscored the importance of regional players getting involved in brokering peace.
“Because the reason you have to have the involvement of regional actors who are directly involved or which are one of the in the region. So, Pakistan has always been a country which has always stood for negotiated settlements of conflicts.”
Pakistan has acted as a key mediary between Iran and the US who have been at war since February 28. It managed to broker a ceasefire deal between the two which came into effect on April 8 and a memorandum of understanding in June.
Both were fragile from the beginning and hostilities flared up again in July.
