International hockey revived in Pakistan after 21 years

ISLAMABAD: In a historic moment for Pakistani hockey, an international hockey team visited Pakistan after 21 years, as the Germany Junior Hockey Team played a match against the Pakistan Junior Hockey Team.

This visit is part of a broader effort to revive international hockey in Pakistan, a sport that once brought the nation immense pride. Over the past two years, significant strides have been made to bring back international hockey through the Prime Minister’s Youth Program (PMYAP). Leading this initiative, PMYAP Chairman Rana Mashhood, alongside Olympian Khawaja Junaid, Focal Person PMYAP Pakistan Pervaiz Sandila, Focal Person PMYAP Europe Junaid Chatta, Sohail Akram Janjua, Mahmood Ahmed, and Yousuf Anjum, played a crucial role in inviting international clubs to Pakistan and arranging matches in Lahore and Islamabad.

The highly anticipated match between Germany’s junior hockey team and Pakistan’s junior team was a thrilling spectacle for hockey enthusiasts. Both teams demonstrated exceptional skills and sportsmanship, offering fans a captivating display of hockey. However, the German team outperformed Pakistan, securing a 4-1 victory.

The event attracted diplomats and dignitaries from various countries, further emphasizing the significance of this sporting revival. Among the notable attendees were the High Commissioners of Malaysia and Brunei as well as the Deputy Head of Mission of the Romanian Embassy, who were prominent figures in the audience.

From Pakistan’s sports administration, Secretary of the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination Zahoor Ahmed and Director General of Pakistan Sports Board Yasir Pirzada also witnessed the match. They commended the young players for their impressive skills and reiterated their commitment to the development and international promotion of hockey in Pakistan.

This match marks a significant milestone in the revival of international hockey in Pakistan. It also reflects the country’s growing efforts to restore its position as a competitive force in the sport and attract more international teams for future tournaments.
