Opposition in Senate rejects Bill seeking to empower PEMRA

ISLAMABAD, JAN 25 (DNA) – Opposition parties in Senate rejected the government introduced PEMRA Amendment Bill on Monday that sought more powers to Pakistan Electronic Regulatory Media Authority PEMRA.

The bill was introduced by Senator Faisal Javed.

Reacting to the opposition rejecting the Bill, Senator Faisal Javed said it is incomprehensible that there is opposition against the rights of working journalists and media workers. He alleged opposition always asked for waivers of their cases and amendments in the NAB Ordinance against every public interest legislation.

Senator Faisal Javed vowed that NAB cannot be amended as per their wishes and Prime Minister Imran Khan will never give NRO to the opposition. PTI leader in the Senate Shehzad Waseem said, “Today everyone knows who against the rights of the workers. The opposition is also politicizing the protection of workers.” Reportedly, The House passed Pakistan Environmental Protection (Amendment) Bill, 2020 to amend EPA Act, 997. Senator Faisal Javed moved the Bill.

Senator Muhammad Javed Abbasi introduced a Bill to further amend the General Clauses Act, 1897 (The General Clauses (Amendment l) Bill, 2021). The Bill was referred to the Standing Committee concerned. Senator Muhammad Javed Abbasi introduced Bill further to amend the West Pakistan Maternity Benefit Ordinance, 1958 (The West Pakistan Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill, 2021).

Senator Muhammad Javed Abbasi introduced Bill to prohibit the use of malpractice in educational examinations in Islamabad Capital Territory (The Islamabad Educational Examinations (Prevention of unfair means) Bill, 2021. The Bill was referred to a Standing Committee concerned.

Senator Kauda Babar introduced the Bill to amend the Pakistan Arms Ordinance, 1965 (Pakistan Arms (Amendment) Bill, 2020. The Bill was referred to the Standing Committee concerned. Senator Mohsin Aziz introduced the Bill to amend the Factories Act, 1934 (The Factories (Amendment) Bill, 2020.

The Bill was referred to the Standing Committee concerned. Senator Seemee Ezdi introduced the Bill to provide for the establishment of the Islamabad Women University, Islamabad (The Islamabad Women University Islamabad Bill, 2020).

The Bill was referred to the Standing Committee concerned. Senator Sajjad Hussain Turi introduced Bill further to amend the Right of Access to Information Act 2017 (The Right of Access to Information (Amendment) Bill, 2020).

The Bill was referred to the Standing Committee concerned. Senator Muhammad Javed Abbasi introduced Bill in the Senate to provide for a mechanism for speedy removal of public grievances (The Public Complaints (Removal of Grievance) Bill, 2020. The Bill was referred to the Standing Committee concerned.
