ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue has issued the list of products which are exempted General Sales Tax (GST). Chairman FBR has directed all field offices to monitor the situation closely.
The list includes vegetables; meat; milk and yogurt; butter; eggs; poultry; red chili; lentils, bread and nan; fruits; ginger; turmeric; ice; medicines; sugarcane and salt.
Earlier on Wednesday, Attorney General Munir A Malik informed the Supreme Court that sales tax was not imposed on milk, eggs, fish, fruits and other food items. Malik said that action would be taken against those found receiving GST on food items.
During the hearing of the case pertaining to the hike in petroleum prices, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry remarked that only parliament had the authority to impose taxes.
