LONDON: Seam bowler Jade Dernbach has been drafted into the England squad for the one-day international series against New Zealand, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Thursday. The 27-year-old Surrey player will provide cover for Tim Bresnan, whose wife is due to give birth.“ Jade Dernbach has been added to the ODI squad for the NatWest Series as cover for Tim Bresnan. Bresnan’s wife is due to give birth during the series and he may leave for a short time,” read a statement from the ECB.

Bresnan has not played for England since January, having subsequently undergone elbow surgery, but he has returned to action for county side Yorkshire.

England will hope he is able to return for the national side in time for the start of the Champions Trophy, which begins four days after the third and final one-day match against New Zealand on June 5 at Trent Bridge.

England tackle New Zealand in the first one-day international at Lord’s on Friday.

New Zealand left-arm seamer Trent Boult was ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against England and is now set to miss the subsequent Champions Trophy tournament as well.

Boult suffered a side injury during New Zealand’s 247-run second Test defeat at Headingley, concluded Tuesday, and bowled just two overs in England’s second innings.

An MRI scan on Wednesday confirmed the initial diagnosis of a muscle tear in Boult’s right side, ruling him out of a three-match series with England starting at Lord’s on Friday and featuring matches in Southampton (Sunday) and Nottingham (Wednesday).

In a New Zealand statement, Blackcaps physiotherapist Paul Close said he expected Boult to make a full recovery in six to eight weeks.

That would sideline the paceman from the Champions Trophy, where New Zealand play their first match against Sri Lanka in Cardiff on June 9.

Fellow pace bowler Ian Butler has replaced Boult for the England one-day series and is in line to take his place in the Champions Trophy squad.

Revised England squad:

Alastair Cook (capt), James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Ian Bell, Ravi Bopara, Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad, Jos Buttler (wkt), Steven Finn, Eoin Morgan, Joe Root, Graeme Swann, James Tredwell, Jonathan Trott, Chris Woakes, Jade Dernbach
